IMPORTANT FEDERAL PERKINS TECH PREP UPDATE
House Slashes CTE Funding
On February 11, the House Appropriations Committee introduced a new FY 2011 appropriations bill, H.R. 1 <http://appropriations.house.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressReleases.Detail&PressRelease_id=261><http://appropriations.house.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressReleases.Detail&PressRelease_id=261> . The legislation completely eliminates funding for the Perkins Tech Prep program for the 2011-2012 school year, an 8 percent reduction in overall Perkins funds, and makes drastic cuts across other education and workforce development programs. This bill is separate from the president's budget proposal, released today for the following year, FY 2012, which suggests even deeper cuts to Perkins.
The bill will be on voted on by the House starting tomorrow, and Members of Congress need to hear from you immediately.
TAKE ACTION
CALL your Representative and Senators today and tell them the cut to Perkins will harm your students, community and the economy! Ask Members to OPPOSE H.R. 1! Even though Senators are not considering the bill yet, if it passes the House they will be the last line of defense.
* You can call the Capitol Switch Board at 202-225-3121 (House) or 202-224-3121 (Senate) and ask to be connected to your Members' offices.
* Try to speak to the staff member that works on education and appropriations issues, if that staff member is unavailable, leave a detailed message.
* Use the talking points (attached).
* Thank the staff member for their time.
Forward this message on to business leaders, teachers, administrators, alumni, parents and anyone else who has a vested interest in CTE. Now is the time to activate the troops and show Congress what CTE programs do to ensure that our workforce has the education and skills to keep the country thriving!
This will result in a $11,251,825 loss to California in Tech Prep funding.
